Tryphena House is a unique, offgrid and iconic property right on the

water, boasting its own small private pebble beach with panoramic

views of Tryphena Harbour framed by Pohutukawa Trees. Formerly

Great Barrier Island's post office, Tryphena House was built in the

1920's on the Eyre Homestead and is nestled in a unique location

in Puriri Bay. Step off the deck, and a few metres to the bottom of

the garden and you'll find yourself in the ocean. Just a 2km along

the bay from Tryphena, the house is secluded but easily

accessible. The house is hosted by and  belongs to Pete & Lucy. We

live onsite in a seperate wing of the house to guests. We are

involved with guests as much or as little as they want us to be. Some

love learning more about our lifestyle, helping themselves to our

gardens learning how to catch and fillet a fish from Pete. Learning

about the simple lifestyle is part of the charm of a Barrier holiday.

Other guests are self-sufficient, we are on hand for anything but

we leave them to enjoy their break.

The Space

We host up to 16 people in seven bedrooms, both double and bunk rooms. There are five queen bedrooms and two bunk rooms with sets of bunks all serviced by two toilets, one with a shower room. There are also two heated outdoor bath tubs and the sea is right at the bottom of the garden.

Water is a precious commodity on the island and we ask our guests to be careful, particularly through the summer months with water consumption.

The house is old but iconic to the Barrier, full of character, equipped with fresh bed linen and towels to make your stay comfortable. We take bookings for groups and, on occasion, couples.

The Kitchen and dining facilities are set in a huge room that looks out over the harbour.  Facilities include a sink, toaster, jug, gas hob and fridge freezer with a beautiful sliding window to outside servery for the warm summer months. The large dining room table has panoramic views of Tryphena Harbour.

There is ample living space with sofa's, a pool table and open fire in a snug second lounge. (TV & WiFi available but most people like to make the most of our surroundings).

You'll have access to all our garden space, extensive decks, weber BBQ and brazier (if no fire ban is in operation).Plus our much loved two spectacular roll top outdoor heated baths sit mounted on a deck overlooking the bay for our guests. Lay back, take in the magical scenery and relax under the Barriers pristine night skies.

We are Pete and Lucy, we live onsite a separate self contained wing of the house (It huge!) and can be involved with you as much or as little as you need.
