Tryphena House is a unique property right on the water, boasting its own small private pebble beach with panoramic views of Tryphena Harbour framed by Pohutukawa Trees. Formerly Great Barrier Islands post office, Tryphena House was built in the 1920's on the Eyre Homestead and is nestled in a unique location in Puriri Bay. Step off the deck, and a few metres to the bottom of the garden and you'll find yourself in the ocean. We are a scenic 2km along the bay from Tryphena, secluded but easily accessible. The house belongs to Pete & Lucy and has attached but separate guest space for people to enjoy the spot and the Barrier as much as they do.

The Space

We can host up to 16 people in seven bedrooms, both double and bunk rooms. The house is old but iconic to the Barrier, full of character, equipped with fresh new linen and towels to make your stay comfortable.

We take bookings for singles, doubles, families and large groups.

Kitchen and dining facilities include sink, toaster, jug, gas hob and fridge freezer with a beautiful sliding window to outside servery for the warm summer months. Plus a large dining room table with panoramic views of Tryphena Harbour.

There is ample living space with sofa's, a pool table and open fire in a snug second lounge. (TV & WiFi available but most people like to make the most of our surroundings).

You'll have access to all our garden space, extensive decks, BBQ and brazier (if no fire ban is in operation).

Plus our much loved two spectacular roll top outdoor heated baths mounted on a deck overlooking the bay for our guests. Lay back, take in the magical scenery and relax under the Barriers pristine night skies.

Living Offgrid

Like much of the island, we generate our own electricity using solar energy. However, we have a newly installed solar power system which means we never rely on the generator and consistently have enough power to run a jug, toaster, charge our electric bikes and warm electric blankets through the cooler winter months. Basic appliances to most people- but a real novelty on the Barrier!

If you are interested in solar energy, renewable energy, battery technology and living off grid come stay with us and we'd be happy to show you the different systems we use.

Double room: $120/night

For individual room bookings please note, the vast living space and bathroom are shared with

other guests, but we only book out 2 or 3 double rooms at any one time.

Group Bookings:

For groups of 6+

Tryphena House is perfect for group get togethers, fishing or walking groups.

Gear for your Island Adventure
